Vince Gilligan Shares He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Will End... For Now.
Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
With the first season of the hit program wrapping up—and the next chapter already in development—Gilligan and his team opened up about the fan response and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.
About the Overwhelming Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions about Pluribus. He is striving to steer clear of all that.
“The experience is akin to force fed something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We don't try to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by online forums.”
“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
The Central Mystery: Does the creator See the Finale of Pluribus?
Considering the creative staff aren't taking cues by fan response, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… sort of.
“We have some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” he states. “but we are always ready to discard a good idea for a better idea. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.
“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”
Alternatively, why mess with the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
