The Golden State is Fully Free of Drought for the First Instance in a Quarter Century.

For the first time in 25 years, no portion of California is experiencing water scarcity. This milestone arrives after grueling years marked by below-average rain that intensified wildfire risks and pressured its enormous farming industry.

A Chart Indicates No Abnormally Dry Areas

A recent update from the national drought tracker confirmed that all of California is without any level of drought. This change resulted from weeks of above-normal rainfall that replenished key lakes like Shasta and Oroville well above their typical levels.

“For anyone 25 or under you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” remarked a climate scientist.

After Severe Systems to Soggy Celebrations

Achieving this status involved powerful and fatal winter storms that struck the state in 2023, causing widespread flooding, power outages, and deaths. Even though those events started to mitigate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.

As late as late December, regions like the state's northeast corner were deemed abnormally dry. Substantial precipitation at the onset of 2026 eliminated those remaining dry spots.

Essential Mountain Snowfall Remains a Concern

But, experts warn that being out of drought does not mean being out of the woods. Latest data of the high-elevation snow indicate it is approximately 70 percent of the average for this date.

This snowpack, which accounts for approximately 30% of the state's water as it runs off, is an essential component for future water availability. Water officials point out that it is premature to make predictions for the months ahead.

“What we are observing right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” explained a hydrology section chief. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to pick up by April 1st so that we’re closer to average.”

While the drought map is entirely green, attention turns to sustaining this precious water balance during the coming seasons.
