The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer behind some of the most iconic looks favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, most notably the light-hued ensembles that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
Price's death comes less than a month after he presented his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "true original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including several ensembles for her American tour after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
