Educational institutions in northern Nigeria have often been targeted for armed groups

Armed assailants have taken the life of an instructor and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an assault against a girls' secondary school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, police reports indicate.

The gang of attackers invaded the public educational institution for female students in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the start of the week, authorities reported.

The attackers "engaged police personnel on duty in a firefight" before scaling the perimeter fence and seizing the students from their hostel, according to a statement.

An educational worker was killed while trying to protect the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now being treated medically.

Eyewitnesses described a large group of attackers, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to generate terror.

Local residents told reporters that the gunmen subsequently marched a number of girls into nearby bushland.

The police said they had deployed "extra specialized police forces, in coordination with armed forces and community security teams" to the area.

A organized locating and saving mission is underway in surrounding forests and suspected escape routes.

In recent years, schools in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for militant organizations, who routinely perform seizures to seek ransom payments or gain negotiating power with authorities.

The attack in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge afflicting the area, resulting in households in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they wait and hope for their young ones' unharmed reappearance.

Security crisis in northern Nigeria has worsened considerably in the past few months, with schools suffering the most of the unrest.
