Cameron Norrie achieved the most important victory of his professional journey by coming back from a lost first set to overcome top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Although he had earlier overcome Alcaraz on two separate matches, this triumph represents Norrie's first ever success over a reigning world No 1.

"Enormous. So big for me," commented Norrie, who becomes the newest British man in history to beat a global number one. "Returning from a physical setback last year, I was defeated in the initial match of qualifying rounds here. I just sought to appreciate my tennis in the closing months of the year. To get a win like this, it's the biggest success of my professional life, my maiden triumph over the world No 1 and likely the most confident competitor in the sport right now."

The British player, ranked No 31, also halted Alcaraz's dominant run of nine finals in a row and 17 successive elite tournament victories, which was the best series of results in the Spanish star's developing career.

Match Overview

Alcaraz appeared to be advancing smoothly to success at the start as he cruised through the opening set. However, Norrie slowly fought his way into the match by executing with improved accuracy and dragging the Spanish opponent into lengthy, physical rallies. His persistent shot tolerance and dependability slowly made an impact.

Through most of the contest, Alcaraz delivered strong serves but he found it challenging to locate his rhythm on his baseline shots. The rising talent seemed particularly uncomfortable striking his primary weapon, which has been the most effective stroke in the world for most of this year, producing 29 mistakes off the forehand side and a combined of 54 unforced errors. Opposing him, the British player presented Alcaraz so few mistakes, keeping up his steadiness, fitness and power all match while performing well on serve and choosing his moments to move inside the baseline and strike effectively.
