Los Angeles Faces Record-Breaking High Temperatures Only Days After Major Winter Storm.
In the wake of heavy downpours that resulted in floodwaters across parts of the city, LA is now seeing abnormally hot weather for late February.
Record-Shattering Temperatures
By Friday afternoon, the thermometer soared to 91Ā°F (33Ā°C) in the city center, according to meteorologists. This breaks the prior high for this date, which was 88Ā°F (31Ā°C) and was recorded in the previous year.
"Very warm conditions" were labeled on official charts for the region.
Safety Advisories
The weather service stated that Friday's conditions posed an "increased danger for heat illness" for vulnerable populations. Their advice suggested:
- Keeping well-hydrated.
- Reducing outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Not leaving children or pets unattended in a parked vehicle.
An Extreme Reversal
This sudden spike in heat comes on the heels of a powerful storm system that battered the state earlier in the week. That storm unleashed heavy snow, strong winds, and thunderstorms to higher elevations, leading to mudslide risks for millions residents.
Unfortunately, the severe weather also resulted in a deadly avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Forecast Ahead
Forecasters predict a cooldown is coming. Temperatures were expected to decrease to around 16 degrees Celsius (61 Fahrenheit) in the city by Friday night.
Other locales that hit the 90-degree mark featured Long Beach, Burbank, and Woodland Hills. Elsewhere, Oxnard, Westwood, Camarillo, and Santa Maria were projected to see the high 80s.
For the weekend, downtown Los Angeles can expect weather in the 80s, with cooler weather expected for the start of March.
