Israelis observe two-year remembrance of 7 October attacks as Gaza peace negotiations proceed
People have come together around the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in Gaza.
The assault led to more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the single most fatal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel answered by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.
"The aggressive opponents have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," the leader stated on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will never again present a risk to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The national leadership delayed official remembrance events until mid-October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still were held throughout the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the relatives of people who died in the Hamas incident was organized in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was televised throughout Israeli television channels.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was held throughout the country.
Negotiation Meetings in Egypt
At the same time, Israeli and Hamas delegations convened in the North African Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to discuss the conditions of the agreement.
A senior Palestinian official familiar with the talks indicated that an night meeting of indirect talks began at 7 PM local time.
The official explained the day's discussions concluded without significant progress, because of differences over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not restart combat after the opening period of the deal.
He added that the talks are "difficult and have not yet deliver any major advancement," but mentioned that facilitators are striving to close the disparities between the two sides.
Key Issues in Negotiations
- An enduring ceasefire
- The trade of the hostages still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Measures for humanitarian aid distribution
- Future governance of the region
Citizen Feeling
In the city's public square that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose sibling survived the attack on the outdoor event, where hundreds were lost their lives and numerous more were captured by Hamas militants - told: "Nowhere feels like home anymore and until every captive are released not a single person will feel safe."
"Once we see everyone home once more, we can feel relief anew. Then we can commence recover," she continued.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in Jerusalem, people congregated to express their solidarity for the relatives of the captives. Israel states 48 stay in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.
Protester one woman stated: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement required for the hostages to return. But we really want guarantees that we will be secure."
Opinion polls now regularly indicate that about the majority of Israelis prefer the war to conclude in exchange for the liberation of the captives.
Palestinian Situation
At the site of Nova festival, mourners came together to honor the dead.
From that location, the boom of aerial bombardments and shelling could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people reported the intense Israeli shelling persisted.
In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were noted in the early hours of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, Rimal and zone areas and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.
"When the dusk comes, the anxiety arrives with it," evacuated urban resident a local woman, whose young son was killed by an Israeli bombing previously, shared.
"We are terrified of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, clinging, notably my smallest child who puts his head on me the entire evening."
"Continuously we check the news to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be finalized and that the war will resume to us."
Humanitarian Situation
The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had accepted the bodies of half dozen people by the afternoon, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Another medical facility in the southern urban center of the city reported another two dead people had been transported. One of them was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while seeking help to the southern area, medics said.
