A Denmark-based man has been convicted of uploading nude segments from protected movies and TV series on the online site Reddit.

Based on a police document obtained by media outlets, the unnamed man shared 347 clips of explicit scenes in a Reddit group he moderated, which were then viewed 4.2 million-plus times.

The country's police confirm he has been given a 7-month suspended jail term for violating copyright laws.

Legal analysts say the defendant was prosecuted under a rarely-used clause in Denmark's copyright law, with the court ruling that by removing the footage out of their intended setting, the man had harmed the performers' "ethical entitlements".

He has additionally been found guilty of sharing more than 25 terabytes of protected data.

From spring 2022 to May 2023, the user known as "KlammereFyr" on Reddit uploaded sexually explicit clips featuring over 100 female performers.

He distributed them in the subreddit he was a administrator of.

Per the Denmark's anti-piracy group The Rights Alliance (TRA), his subreddit had more than 6,000 subscribers and users were prompted to ask for clips of specific performers.

In 2023, advocates filed the incident to the police on behalf of the affected actors, directors and producers, which led to the subreddit being closed down.

Andrea Vagn Jensen, one of the actresses whose explicit content were circulated in the community, told local broadcasters at the time she felt there was a distinction between appearing unclothed in a movie and appearing on Reddit.

The actress stated the posts amounted to "abuse".

'An important signal'

The man was arrested in fall 2024 and pleaded culpable to the allegations recently.

In a statement following the ruling, TRA head Maria Fredenslund said the outcome sent an "significant" signal "indicating violations of artists' entitlements has repercussions".

The ruling is considered unique in the country for its application of the "ethical protections" section of the national copyright law, which states an artist's work cannot be utilized in a way which infringes upon their reputation.

Copyright law specialist a legal scholar informed the media the case was "rare" for its focus on the damage to the integrity of an artist, rather than to them financially.

How the case could influence nations abroad is uncertain.

But she added there may be "an increasing number of these actions" in the future with the advancement of AI, where "the sanctity of an individual's creative output might be compromised much more easily".
