As he approaches his six-year milestone at the helm, Mikel Arteta has admitted that his future at Arsenal is fundamentally dependent to delivering trophies.

Reflecting on: From Appointment to Present

The Spanish coach took over on the 20th of December in 2019 and promptly led the team to an FA Cup triumph within months. Yet, that initial silverware is still his sole top-tier trophy since succeeding Unai Emery.

“Absolutely,” he stated when questioned about his future past 2027. “But it’s about today. And numerous factors must occur in the next few months as well to warrant that continuation.”

This weekend sees the six-year milestone with a fixture against Everton, the identical team Arsenal met immediately following his hiring was confirmed.

Present Challenges

As second-placed Manchester City playing against West Ham on Saturday afternoon, Arsenal face being knocked off top spot in the Premier League prior to their fixture. This potential shift even with Arteta presiding over a squad that has been plagued by more than a century of fitness issues over the course of last season.

The manager currently has 18 months to run on the contract he inked in 2024, however, he knows that results must come in the immediate future.

Earning the Right

He went on to explain, stressing the daily requirement to prove his worth. “I think a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that is determined by how you react, how you talk here, how you step into the dressing room, the signal you send.”

He added, expressing gratitude for the unwavering support from the board and owners, but pinpointing the team's buy-in as paramount. “At the end, the most important ones are those players... For six years, I’ve seen just players with a level of attention, desire to learn and dedicate themselves to the team.”

Injury Concerns

The team heads into the Everton match coping with an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been declared unavailable with a muscle problem that is likely to keep him out for several weeks.

A Different Club

Even with the availability issues and the intense pressure, Arteta feels the club's “focus and dialogue” are profoundly distinct from when he first arrived.

Arteta highlighted the record-breaking achievements as proof they are close. “Examine the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still haven't been able to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the caliber we've reached.”

In closing, the manager stated, “That is a level that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And we want to achieve greater objectives. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
