An Story of Unexpected Generosity: When a University Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dormitory Floor
During 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. My plan was to arrange accommodation when I arrived, yet upon reaching the city, a big convention was happening and all the youth hostels and cheap hotels were completely sold out.
Hailing from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of spend the night at the airport – but soon learned that airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, closes around the clock. With no idea what my next move should be and growing worried, I hopped on a bus into town and started wandering towards a gaming venue, reasoning I might spend those hours somewhere that stayed open 24/7. Admittedly, this plan in the best shape for nailing a crucial interview the next day, but as a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.
We could all use more people who show such kindness.
I must have looked out of place as a woman saw me walking aimlessly through the city center and wondered if I was OK. I explained the story of my accommodation crisis and right away she suggested I could sleep on the ground in her student dorm at the Australian National University – a perfect solution, considering that was where my interview was the following day. She went further by offering some food: one filled rolls she brought back her work shift. I was able to use a hot shower and somewhere safe and safe to spend the night.
Looking back, it’s clear to me the significant risk she accepted as a young woman allowing a guy she’d just met crash at her place. In those days I was in my male privilege bubble and not even thinking to the potential danger. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she offered that help – yet incredibly thankful.
I never did study at that university, and I didn’t meet her again, yet her memory has stayed with me her selfless deed of human compassion. My sincere desire is that life has repaid her act of kindness tenfold. The world needs more folks like that woman.
