A comprehensive search and rescue effort is presently under way in the Caribbean waters for a pair of lost sailing vessels transporting relief goods traveling from the Mexican coast to Cuba.

Maritime Search and Rescue Missions Initiated

Authorities in Mexico has sent navy personnel and search planes to search for the missing boats, which were transporting no fewer than 9 personnel, per a military release.

The ships had been scheduled to arrive in Havana on the early part of the week, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their safe arrival, the navy said.

The Situation of Aid to the Nation

Cuba has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the island endures widespread nationwide blackouts.

"The captains and crews are seasoned mariners, and each boat are outfitted with proper navigational gear and communication devices," a spokesperson for the convoy commented.

The nine crew members are nationals of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexico said it has established contact with coast guard agencies from the involved countries along with their consular staff.

"Our team is co-operating fully with the authorities and are still optimistic in the capability of the sailors to safely arrive in Havana," the spokesperson added.

Previous Humanitarian Delivery

Just days before, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and warmly received a different ship that had transported 14 tons of relief supplies to the island.

That ship, nicknamed "a new Granma" after the boat in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to begin the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, brought solar equipment, drugs, infant formula, bikes and food.

Larger Geopolitical Climate

Volunteers and NGOs have been at the forefront of initiatives to deliver critical assistance to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, a period which saw a energy blockade on the Communist-run nation began.

International organizations have since raised alarms about ""severe" shortages of supplies, with over 50,000 surgeries cancelled in Cuba because of power shortages.

Diplomatic measures have increased lately, with remarks from various leaders emphasizing the delicate state of bilateral relations.

Responding to recent comments, a high-ranking Cuban official insisted that "the governance model of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Reports suggest that early stages of discussions commenced, although their present status remains unclear.

The naval forces affirmed it was committed to using every available asset at its disposal to locate the vessels and guarantee the safety of the people on board.

As of now, there has been no public statement on the missing boats by the Cuban leadership.
