The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Utter Confidence' in Youngster Pitarch
Whenever a 18-year-old creates club history in a crucial Champions League match against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.
During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil last-16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped the Madrid side overcome the English champions in the midweek return to secure a quarter-final berth.
Aged 18 years old, the midfielder was the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by 10 days.
Rapid Ascent Through La Fabrica
The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising young players.
He joined Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
He progressed to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and determination he brought to the team.
'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'
During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the first team and awarded him minutes in pre-season.
However, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing football, each day you head to training and each day you play a match," stated Pitarch after his debut.
"I have just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."
Given a first start in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent four years after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opportunity.
Pitarch has seized it with displays that have defied his age and inexperience.
"He is a very quick footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He is incredibly dynamic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and movement."
Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his coach.
"His standout trait is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the ball, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.
"I realize people are surprised to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to perform his normal game.
"Thiago will continue to get chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a player like him."
A Future International Decision
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.
He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the option to play for either country at the highest level.
Under international regulations, footballers may appear for different countries at junior level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they play in a official full international.
He has played for Spain at youth level, representing both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.
In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision soon."
This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While teenage Yamal opted for La Roja, Diaz decided to represent Morocco.
Focus on the Future
For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.
He played over an hour in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the team pursue trophies to come.
After his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to overanalyze it excessively - I must deserve my minutes on the pitch," he commented after the success at Etihad Stadium.
