The Former Congresswoman Creates History as First Female Governor

Over two and a half centuries, Virginia has seen 74 governors, all of them male. Recently, Abigail Spanberger broke this glass ceiling by being elected as the first female governor in the commonwealth's history.

Centered Around Economic Issues and Targeted Criticism

Ex- US congresswoman and CIA case officer succeeded with a election strategy that focused on everyday expenses and carefully challenged Trump-era measures as opposed to the president himself.

Beginnings and Education

Born in Red Bank, New Jersey on 7 August 1979, she moved to a suburb of Richmond, Virginia at thirteen. Her dad was an army veteran who subsequently pursued a career in police work; her mom was a healthcare professional and community helper.

She attended the UVA, receiving a degree in French literature. Post-graduation, she had a short stint as a classroom instructor before turning to a life of service.

“I was raised believing that I wanted to emulate my father and I did,” she told supporters at a event in the city of Norfolk recently.

Public Service Career

At the Postal Service, she worked cases involving narcotics, abusers and financial criminals. She served search and arrest warrants, frequently being the only woman on the operation squad. She then entered the Central Intelligence Agency and focused on national security, serving undercover and internationally.

Personal Crossroads

In that year, she and her husband Adam, an technical professional, considered their future. Residing on the Pacific coast, they were considering another overseas assignment. They pulled out a globe and asked their oldest child, then in kindergarten, where they should go. Virginia, she answered, because “all our loved ones lives in Virginia”.

Spanberger stated at her rally: “And so we opted to shift from a path of service to country, to service to community because she was right. Everyone we love lives in Virginia.”

Entry into Politics

Back in her home state, she participated in Moms Demand Action, which combats firearm incidents, and started a youth group. In that period, she chose to campaign for the House, which others told her was a “crazy endeavour” because the party hadn't had won the seventh district in half a century.

“But I saw what Donald Trump was implementing with his executive power and how he was dividing communities. And I saw my representative over and over again oppose the healthcare law. And I felt I had to step up. So spoiler: I was victorious.”

Moderate Stance

In Washington, she quickly became associated with the moderate Democrats, a alliance of centrist and fiscally moderate Democrats. She prioritized lower-profile issues: bringing internet access to the countryside, fighting narcotics trade and support for former troops.

She quickly established a reputation for working with Republicans and was consistently rated as the most bipartisan representative of the state's congressmembers. She was outspoken about political rhetoric that she believed turned off centrists, cautioning her party against ideological slogans that could be used against them in swing areas.

Political Alliance

Along with Congresswomen a former CIA analyst and an ex-navy pilot, she was called a part of the “centrist alliance” in contrast to the progressive “group” of the New York representative.

Run for Governor

In that autumn, she announced she would not seek re-election for a another term and would instead campaign for Virginia's leadership in 2025.

Her campaign focused on themes of public service, support for education and infrastructure and protection of democratic institutions. Her federal service lent her credibility on defense issues and she described public service as a calling instead of a job.

Win Over Opponent

This helped her to counter rival candidate her challenger's criticisms on social topics, notably the claim that she is an radical on individual freedoms and medical services for the LGBTQ+ community.

Spanberger, who maintained that local school districts should determine whether trans youth can compete in competitive sports, cast her opponent as the contender more misaligned with the mainstream of the state's voters.
