Amid a clear message to the West, Leader Vladimir Putin has told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to provide “uninterrupted” deliveries of crude oil to India. These remarks came as the two leaders met in Delhi and asserted their partnership were “immune to external pressure.”

A Statement Directed at the West

This affirmation, made on Friday, was widely seen to be a direct challenge at western countries, that have tried to urge New Delhi into curtailing its historical relations with Moscow. The backdrop is in response to previous American measures, such as the imposition of trade penalties on India because of its purchase of Russian oil.

“Russia is a trustworthy supplier of oil and gas and everything required for the development of India’s economy,” the Russian president stated. “Russia is prepared to keep securing the consistent supply of energy for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”

Modi, while not naming energy explicitly, supported the sentiment by stating that “energy security has been a key and vital pillar of the India-Russia partnership.”

Defying Washington's Stance

Prior to the meeting, via a TV appearance, Putin had questioned Washington's stance regarding India's dealings with Russia. He argued, “Should America has the right to buy our atomic materials, how can you deny India claim the identical right?”

The visit represented his maiden visit to India following the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, and Moscow and Delhi made a deliberate show to project that the personal rapport between the heads of state persisted strongly.

A Personal Welcome

In a notable step, Prime Minister Modi personally greeted Putin as he disembarked. They embraced warmly akin to old friends before holding a one-on-one meal the night before the summit.

Modi referred to India's partnership with Russia as “a beacon” and said it was “built on shared respect and strong faith.”

Expanding Strategic Partnerships

The meeting yielded multiple significant pacts in the fields of military and trade relations. A cornerstone agreement was the completion of an joint economic plan aimed at 2030, which sets a goal to boost bilateral trade to a hundred billion USD annually by the target year.

The leaders also vowed to recalibrate their defence ties. While Russia continues to be India's primary supplier of weapons, the volume has diminished in recent years as India has sought widen its sources.

The official release highlighted plans for the co-development of sophisticated defence platforms, although specific details of deals for the fifth-generation aircraft were left out.

Ultimately, both nations affirmed that during the “ongoing challenging, strained, and uncertain geopolitical situation, their relationship remain strong to outside forces.”
